Sea urchin as a Christmas decoration.

Sea urchin shell + some wood + colored LEDs = Christmas (or any other holiday) ornament/decoration. This one is (or was) a sputnik urchin.

If you want to make one you’ll need a sea urchin shell of your liking, there are a lot of them - link to ebay at the bottom of the page. Also you will need some wood, I used a granadillo pen blank but again - use whatever you like (or have). And get some LED stripe, the one I used was ok but better if it was shorter and LEDs closer to each other.

For woodturning finial it’s convenient to have a lathe but probably it’s possible to make a square one? Or sand it a lot to round up all corners.

To power LEDs I used small batteries inside the top part of the ornament. One wire is connected to a switch to turn LEDs on and off and another wire soldered to a connecting screw (connects top and bottom through the shell - you’ll see it in a video).
